Get a Job at NYFW: 5 Simple Tips

New York Fashion Week is one of the biggest events in the fashion industry. To get a job at NYFW is a dream for many people. It not only helps you gain valuable experience, but it allows you to expand your network. But, if you want to work at NYFW, you have to plan in advance. Be prepared to start sending our your portfolio and applying at least 2-3 months ahead of time. Make sure your resume reflects your personality and stands out from the crowd by having the most creative resume design they will see!

Here are five ways to get a job at New York Fashion Week. 

Become a Model

One of the obvious ways to get a job at NYFW is to model for some shows. New York City is home to many of the top modeling agencies, but even if you aren’t signed by of one of them you still have a chance. There are a countless number of shows during the week and lesser known designers are always looking for models to cast. Start off small, you never know, someone could be impressed. Get a job at NYFW by helping out backstage

Work as a Hairstylist or Makeup Artist

Doing the hair and makeup at NYFW is bound to get you noticed. It allows you to improve your craft, get hands on experience and opens the door to work at fashion shows year round.  

Volunteer with a Designer: 

You might not think to do this, but up and coming designers who are breaking onto the scene may not have anyone working in-house. Contact them directly to see if they need help in any areas. Chances are they could always use the help whether it’s to handle press releases or assist them with designs. Many designers are Fashion Mingle members, so try reaching out to them by visiting their profiles!

Be a Photographer:

If you have knowledge of digital photography and own a professional camera, working at NYFW as a photographer is a smart move. Many publications look to hire blossoming photographers during this hectic time. You’ll have an even better chance of getting noticed if you have video editing skills and can create multimedia content quickly. Remember to be respectful, no one wants someone blocking their view of the show just to get their shot. 

Be a Blogger:

The internet and social media are a great resource in today’s society. If writing or discussing the latest trends is your specialty, then you can become a contributing writer. Send some of your writing pieces to your favorite publication and see if they’re interested in fashion week coverage. Make sure you do this a few months in advance! There are only so many staff editors on hand for the event and it’s a great way to build up your writing portfolio. Don’t forget to brush up on your grammar.

If for some reason, you couldn’t get a job for NYFW, don’t be discouraged, NYFW takes place twice a year! Don’t forget to register as a member of Fashion Mingle. It can drastically increase your chances of getting a job at New York Fashion Week.
