Blurring Boundaries with JUST IN XX Spring/Summer 2019 Collection

Justin Yu-Ying Chou, Taiwanese street wear designer for the brand JUST IN XX, presented his SS’19 Collection on Sept. 10, 2018 at New York Fashion Week. Entitled F@$HITION, this collection “blurs the boundaries between modern life and art in an era that largely still worships a specific type of prettiness”, according to the designer.  His idea is to disrupt the idea of beauty in any standard form. He uses clothing design as a way to criticize the age of mass social media use and widespread photo retouching. 

As I browsed the garment racks backstage, I saw a funky and edgy variety of vertical stripes, fun patterns, a lot of denim and some really cool black and white shoes. I couldn’t wait to see how these would make their statement on the runway. The series of unbalanced geometric lines, twisted patterns and distressed tailoring are meant to “toy with the idea of high quality fashion”. As the models walked the runway with fierce confidence, I noticed their clothing was accented with hands strategically placed to mess with the visual perception, unable to tell if it’s the model’s hand or a print.

F@$HITION is an “artistic reaction “ to the evolving fashion world with a demand for perfection. It’s about reclaiming identity and the power of rebranding unique as its own kind of beauty. Justin’s collection displays this through the “sophistication of the imperfect”.

I’ve watched this designer grow over many seasons and and am always blown away by his 100% one of a kind point of view. I never know, and never even try to guess what Justin will do next!
