Runa Ray NYFW Collection: Evolution-Inspired Garments

In Daily Reports, Fashion Designers, Fashion Features, Fashion Week by Melissa Shea

The Runa Ray NYFW collection was the final show of  Spring / Summer 2017. The audience at The Dock at Moynihan Station was overjoyed by this high note that marked the end of fashion week. When we spoke with the designer before the models hit the runway, she noted that “people come not just for the clothes, but for the experience.” This runway show was a fantastic experience featuring garments that were both avant-garde and ready to wear.

Backstage Interview with Fashion Designer Runa Ray

For the Runa Ray NYFW collection, the designer presented garments in a color scheme of beige, green, olive, and black. Ray’s collection featured textiles from around the world, including fabrics sourced from India and Singapore. Suede-finished cottons, organzas, jute, and silks all helped bring this collection to life.

Runa Ray hails from Indian heritage, and completed her education in South-Indian city Bangalore. She graduated from National Institute of Fashion Technology (India), where she received the coveted Best Design award. She then moved to Paris to pursue a masters in Garment Engineering from the Paris Chamber of Commerce at the Ecole Superieure des Industries du Vetements. During this time she worked under many notable designers, including both John Galliano and the House of Dior.

Though she is based far from New York, the designer was quick to point out what a wealth of opportunities can be found in fashion week’s home. “I do feel there is a lot of hidden potential in this city which a designer can explore.” For her first NYFW collection, the theme was “all about evolution”, and featured nods to origami with intricate folding techniques being used in many of the looks presented.

Many of the garments in this Spring / Summer 2017 collection were entirely monochromatic. This decision let the beautiful folds and embroidery take the spotlight. When Ray took to the runway at the end of the collection it was clear that this designer will be one to look out for at future fashion week events!
