Times Square Fashion Week 2020: Moving Fashion Forward

In Fashion Features, Fashion Week by Hannah Hargrove

After a summer of cancelled vacations, postponed concerts, and just general unease and uncertainty, DCG Media Group and Fashion Mingle have brought some light back into our lives: Times Square Fashion Week is HAPPENING. DCG Media Group and Fashion Mingle have partnered with the Manhattan Borough President, Gale Brewer, Times Square Alliance, and NYC socialite, author, and philanthropist, Jean Shafiroff, to put on the 2nd annual Times Square Fashion Week. The shows will be completely virtual for viewers, but will undoubtedly bring a much needed spark to the fashion industry.

Times Square Fashion Week Goes Virtual

So, what does a virtual Times Square Fashion Week look like? The week will kick off on September 8th with a press conference featuring presentations from participating designers, and dignitary speeches from Gale Brewer and Jean Shafiroff. There will also be a presentation from City Harvest, a food rescue organization that has helped to deliver 39 million pounds of food to hungry New Yorkers during the COVID crisis alone. A portion of the proceeds will go directly to City Harvest, including 100% of sales from a limited-edition Times Square Fashion Week face mask.

It is fitting that this year’s Times Square Fashion Week will include City Harvest, an organization working to propel New Yorkers into a more secure future, as the theme of the entire week is “Moving Fashion Forward.” The economic downturn in recent months has not been kind to the fashion industry. Countless artists, designers, manufacturers, retailers, and other industry professionals are struggling to keep their livelihoods going. The intention of this year’s Fashion Week is to bring attention to industry professionals who are working to move fashion forward during these uncertain times.

Following the press conference, the shows will begin and continue until September 12th. They will feature live-streamed photo shoots within Times Square, including on the iconic red stairs in Duffy Square. Designers will also have the opportunity to feature their work on the ever-present Times Square billboards. BAZA Studio is being provided to designers as a venue for a photo/video runway look book, which is what will feature on the billboards. And, of course, all of the events will be COVID-compliant.

Those who are interested in supporting TSQFW will also have sponsorship opportunities. Those who participate will also be featured on Times Square billboards during some of the events.

After months of trying to plan for an indefinite future, it is time for the fashion industry not to return to the norm, but to embrace resiliency and strength, and move fashion forward. Times Square Fashion Week will be a glorious glimpse into the future of the fashion industry.
